THE 2018 GODFREY CHIN PRIZE FOR HERITAGE JOURNALISM
The annual Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism, administered by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc., is inspired by Godfrey Chin’s indefatigable efforts to preserve, promote, and propagate Guyana’s rich cultural heritage and creativity.
The prize was established to encourage and to reward writers whose published works promote an understanding and appreciation of the diverse strands of Guyanese heritage and celebrate the common histories that unite the people of Guyana. It will be awarded to the entries that best embody the spirit, intellect, and wit of Godfrey Chin. The first-place winner will receive US $500, the second-place winner will receive US $300, and the third-place winner will receive US $200.
The theme for the 2018 Folk Festival season is Ma ‘iupe = Working Together: Solidarity Within the Festival Arts. We encourage submissions that recognize practices of solidarity in all aspects of Guyanese society, including the festival arts. Godfrey Chin’s contributions to Guyanese festivals are indelible. The costumed bands and decorated floats he created between the 1950s and the 1980s did much to establish the spectacles associated with tramping (1950s), festivals (1960s), and Mashramani (1970s).
Submissions are invited from Guyanese media professionals and creative artists working in Guyana or in the Guyanese diaspora.
