Come to My Kwe Kwe

Throughout the years of GCA’s Kwe Kwe Nite, the African premarital ceremony, Kwe Kwe, has evolved from being a fun participatory experience, to an educational one for those in attendance, both Guyanese and non-Guyanese.

What is Kwe Kwe

Kwe Kwe is a pre-marital ceremony, usually done the night before the wedding in the Afro-Guyanese culture.

The ritual has its roots in the traditional African culture. This ceremony is frequently done in the country areas of Guyana and the bride- and groom-to-be are taught the rights of passage for marriage life. In other words, how to be good partners for each other. This is done through the singing guided by the elders of the village(s). Most times, the bride- and groom-to-be may live in the same village; if not, the family of the groom-to-be, other villagers, and well-wishers find their way to the house of the bride-to-be.

For the night of the Kweh Kweh, preparations are done at both houses and/or villages. There are songs that tell the story with participation by members of both families, villagers, and well-wishers. These songs are done in a “call and response” format. The “call” is done by the elders spearheading the Kweh Kweh, and the “response” is done by everyone else. As the Ceremony progresses, one could raise a song by saying “batto” – which means to immediately stop singing whatever is being sung at the time, and that same person raises another song. This keeps the trend of whatever is being taught to soon-to-be-married couple.
