“Wow! What a wonderful publication! Certainly highlights the culture of Guyana in an
unprecedented fashion!”
(Mel Foote, Constituency for Africa)
“What a gorgeous publication. Congratulations. It stands as an important contribution to Caribbean/South American arts!! My favorite is the Flounce Off.” (Andrea Frohne, School of Interdisciplinary Arts, Ohio University)
“Many thanks. This is a remarkable special issue honoring the life and performance of one of the salts of the earth in the Masquerade genre.” (Nigel Westmaas, Department of Africana Studies, Hamilton College, New York)
The digital edition was an element in “Masquerade 2.0,” one of the panels at the recent colloquium (March 27 and 28, 2024) on the development of the Digital Archive of Guyanese and Caribbean Festivals, Literature, and Culture, held at the University of Guyana. The panel brought together custodians of Guyana’s masquerade inheritance in Demerara for a conversation about the Guyanese masquerade experience by exploring (a) the masquerade history of the Victoria Village-based Waldron family, (b) the family’s experiences as performing artists, and (c) masquerade livelihoods in Guyana’s contemporary tourism ecology. The outcome of this conversation is presented on page 70 of the hard copy of “Putagee, Masquerade, and We.”
The below form provides information for ordering a copy of “Putagee, Masquerade, and We.” The proceeds will go to the Arts in the Community Project of the Guyana Arts and Cultural Center, the year-round community engagement arm of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc.
